I came to Łódź to look for a piece of history in the form of an apartment building. I researched and planned carefully my time there: genealogy, archive records, a guided tour, a list of streets, but things don’t always work as planned. Many conversations with locals have led to a long line of memories combined with feelings of ambivalence and guilt. There was a moment when someone asked me if this is my first visit in town, I told her I was here many times before and that my grandfather grew up here. I thought to myself that she can do the math.
